Air Pollution

February 29, 2008

The proportion of gases in the atmosphere is fixed. Any change in the proportion of gases in the atmosphere causes air pollution. There are numerous factors responsible for air pollution. They all jointly contribute to the formation of the monster of air pollution.

It all began when the industrialization began. That doesn’t mean that air pollution doesn’t existed before. It did existed but it was in very small amount- caused by natural factors such as forest fires, meteors, volcanic eruptions etc. Today, Air pollution has grown to such an extent that it has given rise to a new monster titled as ‘GLOBAL WARMING’. This new monster is very popular in the newspapers, magazines, T.V. channels and lot more. It has disturbed the lives of lot others.

Air pollution comes from factories, thermal power stations, mines, etc. The hurricane Katrina was originally named as ‘Global Warming’. The original name of Katrina was kept hidden from the people because coal and oil factories has spent millions of dollars on it because if the original cause of the hurricane would get revealed then the biggest enterprises of the world would be shut down.

The toxic gases released from the sulphur, silica, phosphorous and other chemical factories would get mixed with the atmosphere and cause imbalance in the atmosphere.

Watch this video and you will believe the horrendous impact of air pollution:

Atmosphere can itself clear out the pollution but due to continuous and dense flow of toxic gases it cannot clear itself so fast. If the atmosphere is kept as it is for some 8 to 10 years then it can clear itself to it’s original state. That is why scientists are trying to find a renewable, non-polluting source of energy that can last forever. Nuclear energy is such an anergy but it created land pollution because the nuclear waste needs to be thrown in such a place where water does not come in contact with it. Such places are old unused mines. Every day lot of radioactive waste is thrown in several acres of unused land. This causes land pollution.

Solar energy is the best energy of today’s generation. It is pollution free but still it is expensive. So, Scientists are trying to make it cheaper.

  • GLOBAL WARMING:

The atmosphere of the earth already contains green house gases such as methane etc. These gases are meant to absorb heat from the sun and maintain the temperature of earth suitable for life. Increase in these gases causes more absorption of heat and thus increases the temperature on the earth which is better known as ‘GLOBAL WARMING’. Global warming results in the melting of ice caps of the polar regions which in turn causes increase in the sea level. This threatens the sinking of land areas leaving nothing but water on earth.

Global warming also has  many other effects that threatens the possibility of life on earth. At some places where they had no glimpse of rain or snow, they are now stuck and bewildered on seeing floods and heavy snow fall.

Now, The only way to stop the air pollution is to cut down the use of coal and oil factories by 70 per cent. This gives loss to one of the biggest enterprises of the world. The use of aerosol sprayers with CFC’s should be banned strictly as it causes depletion of ozone layer at some areas allowing the ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth. Ultraviolet radiation have wavelengths varying from 100 angstroms to 4000 angstroms. These waves cause skin cancer, dysfunction of immune system and cause damage to eyes. Due to depletion of ozone layer, more infrared rays enter the earths surface which cause more heat.

Thus the not only air pollution but all kinds of pollution should be stopped by hook or crook in order to sustain the existence of life on this planet forever.
